Local and national transgender resources

Despite difficulties LGBTQ Memphians might experience in accessing gender-affirming care and other services, there are local, regional and national resources available.

Advocacy and information

OUTMemphis offers a variety of services and programs for the LGBTQ community, including specifically for trans and nonbinary people of all ages. It has compiled an exhaustive “Trans Best of Memphis Guide 2023.” It is offering $500 microgrants for transgender, nonbinary or gender expansive people who are 18 or older, for a variety of needs, including costs of gender-affirming care.

TN Trans Task Force, based in Middle Tennessee, offers a trans resource guide, which can be emailed on request to this address: tntranstaskforce@gmail.com.WeCare Tennessee advocates and provides programs for transwomen of color who often have a background that includes drug use and sex work.

Gender-affirming care and healthcare

CHOICES Center for Reproductive Health offers gender-affirming care at its Memphis and Carbondale, Ill., offices.

Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi provides in-person and telehealth gender-affirming hormone therapy.

PLUME offers telehealth services, including medication and gender-affirming hormone treatment; it has a medical letter-writing service to support surgery.

PRYSM Care Navigation is OUTMemphis’ new case management program for trans and gender-curious people aged 12-17.

Vanderbilt Health’s VIVID Health in Nashville provides LGBTQ healthcare, including hormone therapy, surgery and other transition services, though it recently sparked controversy over claims it shared health records with the state attorney general.

RegisteredNursing.org offers a comprehensive list articles, websites, podcasts, videos, legal resources and more.

Housing

My Sistah’s House helps trans and queer people of color with emergency and long-term housing, as well as other services.

OUTMemphis’ Rapid Rehousing Program provides urgent assistance to homeless LGBTQ youth aged 18-24.

HIV testing and counseling

The Haven offers HIV and hepatitis C testing, PrEP and PEP prescriptions, and educational programs.

Partnership to End AIDS Status (PEAS) in Memphis provides testing and counseling to those at risk for HIV. 

WeCare Tennessee (above) also offers HIV testing.

Legal services

People seeking legal information regarding gendering-affirming care restrictions may contact the Lambda Legal Help Desk or the ACLU of Tennessee.

Travel assistant for out-of-state care

The Campaign for Southern Equality’s Southern Trans Youth Emergency Project refers families to medical providers and can offer $500 grants for travel expenses, medical costs or other needs.

The Human Rights Campaign compiled a list of organizations that may provide grants to people affected by anti-LGBTQ legislation to relocate or access out-of-state care.
