MLK50: Justice Through Journalism has been awarded a two-year, $200,000 general operating grant from the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation

The investment will be used to support MLK50’s reporting and editing so our newsroom can continue to make a measurable, tangible difference in the lives of Memphians.

“Jonathan Logan has been a staunch supporter of independent journalism, from documentaries to national nonprofit newsrooms to local accountability newsrooms such as ours,” said Wendi C. Thomas, MLK50’s founding editor and publisher. “A thriving free press is essential to a functioning democracy and we’re grateful to have in JLFF a generous foundation partner who understands that.”

JLFF “supports organizations that advance social justice by empowering world-changing work in investigative journalism, documentary film and arts & culture.” They previously funded MLK50 in 2021 and supported our annual NewsMatch campaigns.

“We share MLK50’s vision of justice through journalism,” said Jonathan Logan, president and CEO of the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation. “Wendi and her team are disrupters of the best kind, laser-focused on serving their community, elevating voices that the media often ignores and fearless about investigating the systems and structures that maintain inequality. We are proud to support their work and consider them valued partners of the JLFF family.”

MLK50’s executive editor, Adrienne Johnson Martin, sees this as an opportunity to expand our community outreach and have greater influence on local policies that perpetuate structural inequities in our city.

“It’s so exciting to have the continued support of the Foundation. As our reporting staff grows and the work they produce deepens, it’s so important to have the resources to make the kind of impact we want to make on our Memphis community,” said Johnson Martin.
