NAACP Memphis Branch Virtual Town Hall discussion on violence
When: 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. today
Where: Virtual; Join here; or call: 1-312-626-6799, Meeting ID: 886 9422 3165, Passcode: 617507
Why: There are many myths around violence in the Black community. Because of them, too often, the response to violence is more policing, something that rarely solves the problem or works well for the community. “Experts” have been invited; your experiences make you an expert too. The goal of this discussion is to “focus on solutions and chart a path forward.” Shouldn’t that path be shaped by the people who have to live with the solutions?
#FreePervisPayne Rally
When: 4 p.m. Wednesday
Where: At the corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard
Why: On Nov. 18, District Attorney Amy Weirich announced that Pervis Payne would be taken off death row and instead would serve two consecutive life sentences. It’s a first step for supporters seeking Payne’s exoneration, and so this rally would be part celebration, part next step in the continued effort toward equal justice for all.
The Concerned Pastors of Whitehaven Present: Feed the Need — The Community Thanksgiving Dinner
